Compressor vs desiccant — which is right for you?
Compressor dehumidifiers are more energy-efficient in warm rooms (above 15°C) and extract more litres per day for the money. Desiccant models work at any temperature, making them better for garages, conservatories and cold outbuildings in winter. Most UK living spaces stay above 15°C, so a compressor model is usually the right default.
How to choose the right capacity (litres per day)
For bedrooms and small rooms under 20m²: 10–12L/day is sufficient. For living rooms and medium spaces of 20–40m²: 16–20L/day. For large open-plan areas or seriously damp homes: 25–30L/day. Oversizing slightly is fine — the unit will run less frequently rather than working harder.
Placement matters more than most buyers expect
A dehumidifier works best in the centre of a room or against a wall with clear airflow all around. Avoid placing it in corners, behind furniture or in cupboards. Rooms with higher moisture sources — kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms — benefit most from direct placement. Move it room to room for broader coverage if you only own one unit.
Running costs are manageable if you use the auto mode
A typical 300W compressor dehumidifier costs around 8–10p per hour at UK electricity rates. Running it for 4 hours daily costs roughly £10–15 per month. Most models include a humidity target setting — set to 50–55% relative humidity and the unit will cycle on and off automatically rather than running continuously.
Laundry drying mode is a genuine time saver
Most premium dehumidifiers include a laundry or boost mode that increases fan speed to accelerate moisture extraction around drying clothes. This is significantly faster than ambient drying and reduces the condensation that open drying racks create on windows. If you dry clothes indoors frequently, prioritise this feature.
Continuous drainage eliminates the biggest daily frustration
A full tank in a severely damp room can happen in hours. Most dehumidifiers include a continuous drainage hose connection — attach a standard hose and route it to a drain or sink to eliminate manual emptying entirely. This is especially useful in utility rooms, basements and garages.
